Grand Prairie's roots trace to 1863 when A.M. Dechman purchased 239 acres of prairie land. Originally called "Dechmanville," it was renamed Grand Prairie when the Texas & Pacific Railway arrived in 1876. The city grew as an agricultural center before World War II brought defense manufacturing — notably the North American Aviation plant that built P-51 Mustangs and B-24 Liberators.
